Q. Can I start with guitar or do I have to learn piano first?
A. Guitar is a great first instrument. You do not need any prior training or experience with piano or any instrument to learn to play the guitar.
Q. Will I learn to read music?
A. You can learn to read music. You should talk to your teacher about your goals. Reading music is a great learning tool. Having a basic understanding of reading music is something that everyone who plays an instrument should be able to do.
Q. Do I have to read music?
A. Reading music is optional. Many guitarists are intimidated by the idea of learning to read music. It's not that hard to learn to read music, give it a try!
Q. Can I learn to play rock music?
A. Yes, you can learn to play rock music or any style of music you choose. Some bands write songs that are very easy. (Almost anyone can learn a Green Day song.) Other artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin write music that is very difficult to play. Many students use songs to set goals like, "I want to play Stairway to Heaven by the end of the summer. "
Q. Can I start on electric guitar or do I have to start with an acoustic?
A. You can start lessons with an electric guitar. In many ways students find electric guitar easier to play. The strings are lighter and easier to press down and the body of the guitar is smaller and easier to manage.
It's hard to believe that I have been in business for so long. My Chicago location opened in July 1990, and my first suburban location opened in Hinsdale in January 1991. I have been in Westmont since September 1993. It's amazing to have second-generation students taking lessons. I personally select and train every teacher. I have really high standards. All my guitar teachers have professional music training and a college degree. These can include universities, colleges, Music Schools, Conservatories or other professional programs like the Musicians Institute. There is also a long list of criteria: personality, ability to teach a beginner, do they like to teach children, can they communicate with parents, etc. I would never hire anyone looking to work for me as a teacher until something better comes along. I believe you deserve the best.
